The Nigerian Natural Medicines Development Agency (NNMDA) is championing an innovative and ambitious initiative to produce pharmaceutical-grade starch locally, leveraging Nigeria’s vast cassava resources. This initiative aims to cut the nation’s $23 million annual import costs, create jobs, and strengthen economic growth.

At a recent webinar titled “Unlocking Nigeria’s Potential: Natural Medicine, Cassava Cultivation, and Pharmaceutical-Grade Starch Production,” NNMDA’s Director-General/Chief Executive, Prof. Martins Emeje, stressed the need for collaboration across the cassava value chain. This effort is expected to enhance healthcare delivery, promote self-reliance, and empower students, youths, and women.

The Cassava Value (Chain) Addition Initiative (CVAI) under this project focuses on cultivating cassava specifically for pharmaceutical applications. Additionally, NNMDA plans to train five million youths in cassava farming and processing, fostering innovation and economic inclusion.
