Covenant University Forges Partnership with NNMDA to Advance Science and Research

In a significant move aimed at fostering innovation and advancing research in Nigeria, the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) and Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, have initiated a partnership to leverage their respective expertise and resources.

The collaboration was formalized during a courtesy visit by Professor Martins Emeje, the Director General/Chief Executive of NNMDA, and his team to Covenant University on March 18th, 2024. The delegation was warmly received by the university management, including the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, and other top officials.

During the meeting, Professor Emeje outlined the purpose of the visit, emphasizing the shared commitment to advancing science beyond basic research towards tangible applications that benefit society at large. He highlighted the need for partnerships between academia, industry, and governmental agencies to drive research transformation into products that address societal needs.

In response, Professor Conrad A. Omonhinmin, Director of Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation & Discovery (CUCRID), commended NNMDA for taking the initiative and expressed the university’s keen interest in collaborating on research projects that transcend academic boundaries. He emphasized the importance of industry-academia partnerships in utilizing available facilities to develop products that positively impact humanity.

The meeting underscored the significance of drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as the foundation for collaborative research endeavors. It was agreed that a draft MOU would be prepared and forwarded for further discussions to expedite the commencement of joint research initiatives.

Covenant University’s management reiterated the need for African institutions to prioritize the development of indigenous products to revitalize the continent’s economy. They expressed confidence in NNMDA’s capabilities to drive impactful research and contribute to Nigeria’s economic resurgence.

In closing remarks, the Vice Chancellor lauded NNMDA’s proactive approach and expressed admiration for Professor Emeje’s passion for African development. He affirmed the university’s commitment to community-driven research initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of the broader population.

The meeting concluded with prayers and a group photograph, symbolizing the commencement of a promising collaboration between NNMDA and Covenant University. This partnership is poised to drive scientific innovation, foster economic growth, and contribute to societal development in Nigeria and beyond.
