The Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) has launched an unprecedented and ambitious program called the Cassava Value Chain Initiative (CVCI). This program is a departure from the traditional cultivation of cassava for food only, but, rather, it’s aimed at providing specialized training in Good Agricultural and cultivation practices and good manufacturing practices for pharmaceutical and natural medicine development.
An average of five million Nigerian youths will participate in this groundbreaking program, which seeks to leverage Nigeria’s position as the world’s largest cassava producer, contributing over 20% of global output, to drive economic growth and job creation.
Speaking on the initiative, NNMDA’s Director-General/Chief Executive, Prof. Martins Emeje, emphasized its focus on unlocking the vast potential of cassava farming to support the pharmaceuticaland natural medicine industries. The program includes establishing large-scale cassava farms and building modern processing facilities to produce pharmaceutical-grade starch and innovative natural medicine products.
This initiative underlines NNMDA’s commitment to advancing research and empowering Nigeria’s youth through innovation.
