The Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) on December 17, 2024, hosted a landmark training program focused on the National Skill Qualification for Traditional Medicine Practice. This initiative targeted research staff and aimed to equip them with competencies that align with global standards for occupational skill assessment in Traditional Medicine.
Participants delved into the framework for skill certification, which emphasizes practical expertise in essential areas such as identifying medicinal plants, preparing basic formulations, and dispensing traditional medicinal products. This training represents a pivotal step toward the professionalization of Traditional Medicine in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Martins Emeje, the Director General/Chief Executive, outlined the agency’s vision: “This training is a stepping stone towards positioning NNMDA as a center for excellence in skill certification. It equips us to lead the way in enhancing professionalism and standards in Traditional Medicine.”
The program highlighted a certification framework incorporating competency-based assessments. This framework is designed to develop skilled practitioners starting at the Assistant Traditional Medicine Practitioner Level 1, with participants evaluated against specific performance criteria tied to well-defined learning outcomes.
