In a groundbreaking move to advance Traditional Medicine in Nigeria, the Federal Government has officially designated the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) as the National Skills Acquisition Center for Traditional Medicine. This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to professionalizing Traditional Medicine Practice and ensuring it aligns with global standards.
The designation follows NNMDA’s landmark training program held on December 17, 2024, which focused on the National Skill Qualification for Traditional Medicine Practice. The training equipped research staff with the skills needed to meet global standards for occupational competency assessments in the sector.
Participants of the program engaged in hands-on sessions covering critical aspects of Traditional Medicine, including identifying medicinal plants, preparing basic formulations, and dispensing traditional medicinal products. The event marked a significant step toward establishing a structured framework for skill certification in Traditional Medicine.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Martins Emeje, the Director General/Chief Executive of NNMDA, emphasized the agency’s pivotal role in transforming the sector. He stated, “This training is a stepping stone towards positioning NNMDA as a center for excellence in skill certification. It equips us to lead the way in enhancing professionalism and standards in Traditional Medicine.”
The certification framework, highlighted during the program, is competency-based and focuses on developing practitioners at the Assistant Traditional Medicine Practitioner Level 1. Participants are assessed against specific performance criteria to ensure they meet clearly defined learning outcomes.
With this new designation, NNMDA is poised to play a central role in the development of a skilled workforce, fostering innovation, and strengthening the credibility of Traditional Medicine in Nigeria. The agency’s efforts align with international trends, ensuring Nigeria remains at the forefront of global advancements in Traditional Medicine Practice.
This milestone reflects the Federal Government’s dedication to promoting Traditional Medicine as a viable component of the nation’s healthcare system and a significant contributor to economic development.
