Prof. Martins Emeje emphasizes local R&D in drug manufacturing

The Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) popularly called Natural Medicine, NAMDA, BABALAWO Agency, Traditional Medicine Agency is an apex autonomous agency under the aegis of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Government of Nigeria. NNMDA was established in 1997 but obtained a presidential assent to its establishment bill on 24th June 2019, its ACT was gazetted on 20th December 2019.

It is the nation’s only trans-cultural medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health, create jobs, wealth and save lives using innovative technologies that are rooted very strongly in Nigeria’s culture.

The NNMDA laboratory headquarter, known as the “KOFO ABAYOMI” to the local community, is located in Victoria Island, Lagos. The temporary administrative headquarter is located at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Abuja. NNMDA scientists conduct their research in laboratories located on the main campus, and in several field units across the country. The purpose of this laboratory is to advance knowledge and to apply physical, life, and earth science as well as religious and cultural science for the good of the people

The Office of the Director-General is the central office at NNMDA and is responsible for setting day to day management and for planning, managing, and coordinating the programs and activities of all NNMDA components. The Director-General is responsible for providing leadership to the agency, its college and centres for constantly identifying needs and opportunities that will benefit our people, especially in holistic health, wellbeing, job and wealth creation.

The agency is deeply committed to creating and sustaining a self – driven and self – managed learning organization with a high degree of internal and external transparency through a culture of collective and principle-centred leadership. The agency operates purely on merit, we value the dignity of the individual and deal with people with a sense of fairness and without bias, prejudice or favour thereby nurturing the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct.

With these in mind, we carry out our R&D with a view to eventually deliver products, processes, intellectual properties, tacit knowledge or services that can create job, wealth and provide other benefits to Nigerians. We pledge to create and sustain specialized Knowledge Competencies towards creating high-quality researchers with competencies in natural medicine.

Although our immediate goal is to generate opportunities for the wellbeing of the nation and, thereby, enhance the quality of life for its people, we aim to be a globally recognized and respected R&D organization that contributes significantly towards assisting Nigerian industries in transforming themselves into globally competitive organizations. Towards this, we have obtained an international accreditation for laboratory competency, ISO 17025, while ISO 9001 and 22000 will follow soon. We have also received initial listing-registration assessment results for 17 innovative products from Nigeria FDA (NAFDAC); the largest by any government-owned R&D institution in Nigeria.

I encourage any and everyone interested in genuine national and global health development through R&D collaboration and partnerships to reach out to us; we have no closing time, because, our vision is our mandate, our mandate is our call, and our call is our passion.
