The World Health Organization (WHO) has appointed the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA), Professor Martins Emeje, as Co-Chair of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (STAG-TM).
Professor Emeje was appointed alongside Dr Susan Wieland, Director of Cochrane Complementary Medicine (USA), following a competitive global selection process involving 19 international experts.
The STAG-TM will provide independent scientific and technical advice to WHO on research priorities, regulatory standards, integration of traditional medicine into health systems, and policy guidance for Member States, in line with the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034.
Professor Emeje described it as a major honour for Nigeria and a strategic opportunity for Africa to contribute meaningfully to shaping the global traditional medicine agenda.
This appointment reinforces Nigeria’s growing leadership in evidence-based traditional medicine, innovation, and global health governance.
