The Agency’s activities can be subsumed into the following;

  • Development of a Library/ICT – This is aimed at developing a Dedicated Focal Reference Centre for the Development and Promotion of Traditional Medicine. This is to promote the development and promotion of Traditional Medicine products and practices. It is also to assist, promote, preserve and protect our indigenous knowledge, culture and heritage and nation’s intellectual property rights on Natural Medicine knowledge products and practices; promotion of e-commerce and create markets for Medicinal, Aromatic and Pesticidal Plants (MAPPs) and other herbal drugs/products of Nigeria origin.


Digital Identification and Documentation of Medicinal, Aromatic and Pesticidals Plants (MAPPs), Animal/Animal Parts and Minerals used in Traditional Medicine. This is aimed at Development of a Comprehensive National Inventory of Medicinal Aromatic and Pesticidal plants


  • Observational Studies of Herbal Therapies for Tropical Diseases including HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, diabetes etc. This is aimed at the development observational studies and provision of scientific evidence base for herbal therapies for topical ailments.


  • Training and Education. The concept is to train the TMPs to enhance their capacity to improve their practice and products especially in view of the fact that over 85% of the population depend on them, especially at the primary healthcare level. Also to train the TMPs to be veritable vehicles of appropriate information dissemination to assist combat communicable disease among others.


  • Public/Private Partnership – Extension Services This is aimed at assisting the practitioners meet stipulated standards and markets their products including shelf life and batching standard studies


  • Development of an Appropriate Mechanism for the Intellectual Property Rights Mechanism for the Development and Promotion of Traditional Medicine


  • Cultivation and Conservation Pesticidal Plants. This is to serve as aids to proper species identification, conservation and protection, key useful raw materials for Traditional Medicine Practitioners for use in their formulations and entrepreneurs, who wish to go into herbal drug formulation, promote entrepreneurs development, wealth and job creation, promote documentation and preservation of indigenous Intellectual Property. It would also assist the protection and propagation of endangered species.


  • Collation and Documentation of Published Research Works and Findings on Traditional Medicine Knowledge and Practices (TMKP), Products and Medicinal, Aromatic and Pesticidal Plants (MAPPs) Indigenous to Nigeria. This is to facilitate centralization of all research findings, ease of referencing, reduction in research duplication, gap identification, promote further research; and possible commercialization and entrepreneurship development.


  • Development of Pilot/Experimental Medicinal, Aromatic and Pesticidals (MAPs) Plant Farms/Nurseries in the Six Geopolitical Zones. This is aimed at cultivating properly identified plants in the areas that they grow best, preserve local knowledge and plants for local use, preserve plants that are about to go extinct, facilitate the study and documentation of the biotic factors and general agricultural conditions needed for medicinal plants to be grown, domesticated and cultivated.


  • Development of Herbarium and Pilot Experimental Plants Farms/Gardens. This aim is to cultivate important medicinal plants for research and teaching and also to preserve and maintain botanical samples collected from different localities and ecology, at various seasons during the ethno field for plants identification, floristic work and others.


  • Laboratory and Pilot Production Unit Development (PDU) (Primary Efficacy and Safety Analysis). This to assist practitioners in the development and production of safe and efficacious therapies, including the development of appropriate low cost process technology and formulation of standardized low cost highly essential herbal remedies.


  • Ethno-medicinal survey in 6 geopolitical zones of the country and ecological zones of the country with a view to developing a comprehensive national inventory of Medicinal Aromatic and Pesticidal and Plants (MAPs) of the country to aid further research, training & learning and facilitate sustainable availability of raw materials for the development of traditional medicine industrial sector of the economy.

 These are first such publications in the country and in line with Presidential Directives, copies of these publications are being circulated to all Higher Educational and Research Institutions in the country with the support of the NATIONAL AGENCY FOR SCIENCE & ENGINEERING INSFRASTRUCTURE (NASENI)


  1. Developing a Digital/Virtual Library: A dedicated focal reference centre for the Development and Promotion of traditional medical knowledge, practice and products development and promotion. This is the first in the country and perhaps the 1st of its kind in Africa.


  1. The Agency is working with the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) and other stakeholders nationally and internationally to address Intellectual Property Rights issues for appropriate benefit sharing, preservation and protection of Nigeria’s TMK, practices, MAPs, sciences and technologies.


A draft policy and legal instrument, in this area has been developed and is being subjected to wider stakeholder review and contribution and subsequent finalization. The first, second & third of such reviews covering the South West, South East and North East Zones have been concluded. Other zonal review workshops are being developed.


The Agency conducts training and interactive session covering the entire country to improve the products development skills and practices of Traditional Practitioners. It has developed training modules in line with World Health Organisation’s (WHO) specification for continuing education program for TMPs. To date the Agency has conducted 30 training and interactive sessions and has trained Ten Thousand (10,000) Traditional Medicine Practitioners in the six geopolitical zones of the country.
